Economist Makes Lead Story in the Wall Street Journal….Barron’s….and Forbes

April 28, 2014 By Mark Skousen 4 Comments

I made the lead story in the Wednesday, April 23, 2014, edition of the Wall Street Journal.  The title:  “At Last, a Better Economic Measure.”  You can read it here:  http://on.wsj.com/PsdoLM

The editors of the WSJ don’t allow the author to see or approve the headline or subhead, but they nailed it perfect.  And I love the cartoon graphics!  It’s a perfect rendition of my four stage model of the economy.

Many readers captured the essence of my message.  As economic forecaster Jim Hagerbaumer of Florida wrote:  “Skousen is introducing a whole new species. This is one of the most important WSJ op-ed articles in years.”

I also wrote about Gross Output (GO) in the December 16, 2013, issue of Forbes.  Here’s the online version, with charts and response to critics:

My original article in Forbes Magazine (December 16, 2013):

Additional Commentary by Steve Forbes:

Record 2,500 Gather at “Best FreedomFest Ever”

July 23, 2013 By Mark Skousen 3 Comments

By Mark Skousen

“FreedomFest was a gigantic conference.  It drew many academics, journalists, activists of all ages, vendors, investors, and a huge variety of professionals in all fields. And of course, Laissez Faire Books was there in full force. The level of fun was totally over the top. But the content of every session I attended was just spectacular.” – Jeffrey Tucker, president, Laissez Faire Books

Everyone seems to agree:  Our 7th FreedomFest was the “best ever” according to the many emails I’ve received – from Alex Green, Floyd Brown, Susana Etcheverry, Bert Dohmen, Brian June, and Gene Epstein, economics editor at Barron’s.  Dinesh D’Souza said that FreedomFest has rapidly become “the premier libertarian gathering.”

We broke all kinds of records this year – number of attendees, sales of books at our official bookstore (Laissez Faire Books), and CDs/MP3s.  Numerous sessions, panels and debates at Planet Hollywood were standing room only.  And for the first time we had a major TV network, Fox Business at FreedomFest, along with C-SPAN.  (Plus a nice mention by Bill O’Reilly on Fox News in his interview with John Stossel.) Head to Head: “Public Vs. Private Spending: How to Get the Economy Growing Again”

June 28, 2013 By Mark Skousen Leave a Comment

Today’s Orange County Register published a point-counterpoint debate between Mark Skousen and Robert Kuttner on “Public vs. Private Spending:  How to Get the Economy Growing Again.”  See the attached file, that includes an ad to this year’s FreedomFest.

FreedomFest 2012 “Wall to Wall Excitement”

July 16, 2012 By Mark Skousen Leave a Comment

Dear Investors and Friends of Liberty,

I just returned from the “one of a kind” conference, FreedomFest, where more than 2,000 investors and concerned citizens heard from over 150 speakers, including Sen. Rand Paul, Judge Andrew P. Napolitano, Steve Forbes, John Mackey, Peter Schiff, Alex Green, Robert Kiyosaki, and a host of other financial gurus.  One comment overheard: “FreedomFest is wall-to-wall excitement!”

It was electrifying, beginning with standing a room-only (SRO) crowd, listening to Dinesh D’Souza talk about his latest film “2016: Obama’s America,” and ending with Robert Kiyosaki, author of “Rich Dad, Poor Dad,” speaking on “Be The Fed:  Gaining Your Unfair Advantage in an Unfair System.” The exhibit hall, “the trade show for liberty,” was abuzz with more than a hundred think tanks, freedom organizations, and financial services. C-SPAN was there to interview over a dozen authors (to be aired soon). [Read more…]

My Run In with the Irrepressible and Dangerous Paul Krugman in London

June 1, 2012 By Mark Skousen 7 Comments

I’ve been in Poland and England on a very successful speaking tour — all SRO crowds.  In Poland, thanks for Jan Fijor, many of my books have been translated….In London I spoke at the Adam Smith Institute on “Austrian economics for Investors” and the Institute for Economic Affairs on “Hayek vs. Keynes:  Who’s On Top?”  Needless to say, in today’s crisis mode, Keynes and Keynesian economics are clearly on top.

Speaking of which……

This evening after my wife and I went to “Top Hat,” a fantastic new musical based on Irving Berlin’s film of the same name, we ran into Paul Krugman, the Nobel Prize economist and foremost advocate of “crude” Keynesian deficit spending, who is here in London on a book tour.  I asked him a series of questions: [Read more…]

Update on FreedomFest 2011

July 27, 2011 By Mark Skousen Leave a Comment

Dear Friends of Freedom,

I’m happy to report that FreedomFest 2011 was another rip-roaring success. With highlights featuring Senator Rand Paul, Judge Andrew Napolitano, John Mackey (CEO, Whole Foods) and Peter Thiel (founder, PayPal), among many others, the nearly 3,000 attendees had non-stop opportunities to learn, discuss and generate new ideas on liberty and freedom.

We also had the premiere of the Anthem Film Festival, with over 30 films screened. Winners and awards are listed on the Anthem Film Festival website. These narrative and documentary films had terrific messages, strong storylines and interesting concepts that you don’t want to miss. Check out the website. And be sure to part of the Anthem Film Festival next year!

Please see this youtube video, produced by Reason.tv (which was there for the entire conference, conducting fascinating interviews), entitled “What We Saw at FreedomFest” for a nice recap of the conference.

Likewise, you’ll have a chance to view several of the exciting sessions, thanks to C-SPAN’s Book TV. Starting this Saturday, July 30, you can see FreedomFest on C-SPAN Book TV! For more information, go to http://www.booktv.org/Schedule.aspx

If you have never attended FreedomFest before, please consider joining us next year, when we celebrate the Wild West at FreedomFest 2012, July 11-14, at Bally’s in Las Vegas. (Just think 7-11 in Vegas!) And to all our regular attendees, we look forward to meeting up with you once again in Vegas for FreedomFest. Meanwhile, keep protecting our liberties…stay free!

Cheers, AEIOU,
Mark Skousen
